This year marks the 37th annual celebration of Oktoberfest in Ruidoso and folks are coming from near and far to enjoy the fun, fellowship and food!

Oktoberfest was started in Bavaria in 1810 when King Ludwig I celebrated his marriage to his lovely princess. Not only was it a celebration of love, but it was a festival celebrating the autumn harvest and…beer. For over 200 years, this German tradition has put many a smile on the faces of festival-goers in these here mountains and around the world.

But it’s not just about the beer. No. It’s about good old fashioned German food. From the savory sausages and sauerkraut to the absolutely amazing Apfelkuchen. Apfelkuchen is a classic, German apple cake, but can be found in several variations, such as Gedeckter Apfelkuchen, which is more like a double crusted pie. Bet ya can’t wait to see what yummy varieties of Apfelkuchen will be served at this year’s event. Don’t forget to sample the other tasty treats: Reuben sandwiches, german potato salad, Black Forest cake, potato and apple pancakes, Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) and caramel apples.

Oktoberfest isn’t really Oktoberfest without the traditional music of Bavaria. Get ready to swing to the sounds of Swingshift, a popular band from Albuquerque. Polka band DPS or Die Polka Schlingel, also from Albuquerque, will get you on your feet! And all the way from Anif, Austria, Familienmusik Doppler is sure to delight dancers!

There will be food and beverage booths and over 40 arts and crafts vendors. Don’t forget to take the Kindchen (small children) to the Kinderhall for various games and good times!

For those of you die hard festival goers…you are encouraged to show up dressed up in your Lederhosen (leather britches) and Dirndls (dress).

This year’s event is produced by Special Events Resource Group, a New Mexico non-profit organization that helps fund scholarships for the kids of Lincoln County.
