The Great High Mountain Bed Race and Green Chile Cook-Off

Get ready – once again – Ruidoso, for something different, unique and fascinating. On Saturday, June 3, the Great High Mountain Bed Race at 10 a.m., on Sudderth Dr., in midtown, will roll off to the 1st annual competition of its kind. This event should prove to be highly entertaining for all bystanders, including visitors and residents alike.

Be sure to get there early, as the race will be preceded by a colorful parade through midtown starting at 9 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., there will be a green chile brunch cook-off, replete with games, at Wingfield Park. Three judges will rule on taste, texture and heat within New Mexico authenticity traditions. The entire activities will conclude at 1 p.m. when the winners will be announced.

Come one and all and help support, sponsor or contribute to the High Mountain Youth Project, a 501(c)(3) non-profit group of dedicated individuals committed to serving homeless youths, 14 to 19 years old. Its goals are to keep youths supervised and safe with caring adults; keep them in school or help get them back in school. The nine-member board of directors is composed of professional people from the Ruidoso area. Ruidoso is well-recognized as a community devoted to helping those in need.

The Great High Mountain Bed Race entry fee is $100 per team, which will be made up of six members (four pushers, one rider [helmet required] and one alternate). One member will serve as the team captain and shall be the only person to communicate with race officials. The challenge for each team is to raise a minimum of $600 if there is no sponsor.

The beds must have a twin size mattress and no part of the bed may be higher than 6 feet, so that all pushers will have a clear line of sight to the raceway. Youth teams are to be comprised of middle or high school age students (sixth grade through 12th grade). All means of motion are limited to the individual race team members (no motorized or mechanical modes allowed). There are additional rules in place and a June 2, deadline for all entries.
