Halloween Events Galore in Lincoln County

Halloween, All Hallows Eve, Dia De Los Muertos, Day of the Dead. Interesting how so many “holidays” center on this  one day, Oct. 31.

Just about raised in the U.S. knows what it’s like to dress up as a monster, ghoul, superhero or pirate and walk around neighborhoods in the cold fall air, going from house to house and asking for some candy handouts.

Or, maybe they remember going to a Halloween costume party with friends and family, bobbing for apples and telling – or listening to – ghost stories.

And then there’s the traditional haunted house. Regardless what your memories are, there’s something for everyone in Ruidoso and Lincoln County this Halloween season.

The most traditional of all traditions in Ruidoso is the Midtown Trick or Treat, held on Sudderth Drive and sponsored by Midtown businesses. Running from 3-5 p.m. during daylight hours on Oct. 31, the entire two-block area will be packed with costumed young and old alike, haunting the businesses and stocking up on treats.

Before making that trek, be sure to stop at Wingfield Park, just one block south of Midtown, to take part in the Haunted Halloween event. Pumpkin carving and costume contests are also a part of the festivities. The costume contest is for children ages 17 and under, with an award given to one boy and one girl. Pumpkin carving is for 18 and up. Bring your already carved pumpkin to decorate Wingfield Park at 5 p.m.

If you’d rather be a bit safer and stay off the streets, there’s the annual Trick or Trunk at the Community United Methodist Church at Thomas B Dr. and Church Street, one block south of Sudderth Dr. Church members park their cars, decorate them for the season, and kids can walk from vehicle to vehicle in complete safety while taking part in games and reveling in the season. This year’s CUMC Trick or Trunk is Oct. 30 starting at 2 p.m.

Ruidoso isn’t the only place around for Halloween fun. Capitan Municipal Schools will also hold a Trunk or Treat, Oct. 31, from 5-6:30 p.m. in the school’s parking lot at Tiger Drive and First Street.

There’s also the annual Capitan Women’s Club Fall Carnival, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds at Highway 48 and Lincoln Ave. starting at 6 p.m.
