Dummy Gelunde & Torchlight Parade: Ski Apache Inspires Dummy Downhill Ski Run
Who says fire and ice don’t mix? The powers that be at Ruidoso’s prominent ski resort have proven the opposite for the past eight years and will do so once again Dec. 28, when the ninth annual Dummy Gelunde and Torchlight Parade – replete with fireworks – takes center stage on the downhill slopes of Ski Apache.
Most would believe dummies can’t negotiate the expertly designed descending runs but that has also proven to be false over the past years of this popular event. Dummies can ski!
This anticipated after-Christmas event will commence on the above-mentioned date at 1 p.m. and is set to conclude after sunset with torch-bearing skiers as they manage their way down the mountain to the cadence of Native American drums. As the end nears, a sensational spectacle of fireworks will illuminate the night sky.
With the 1 p.m. start, the Dummy Gelunde competition will begin and that part of the day’s merriment will close at 3 p.m. Homemade dummies will show their talent as they accelerate down the elevated course before taking a leap of faith from a huge jump between the Capitan Heavy and Easy Street routes.
Each mannequin-like figure will be assessed on vault distance and height, landing exhibition, artistry and spectator reaction.
“This is a really fun event,” Ski Apache Marketing Manager Justin Huffmon said. “It’s entertaining and a nice time for families and friends to get together. The Dummy races are only $25 to enter and I feel our fireworks show in the evening is the best in southern New Mexico.”
Each dummy crew will compete for total prize monies amounting to $2,750. First place will be awarded $1,500; second place will receive $750 with third place getting $500. For $25, crews of three or less may enter up until noon on the day of the event.
The model figures must be between three to seven feet in height; no more than four feet wide; may not be too heavy for the crew to lift; must not carry any explosive material of any nature and cannot be accompanied by living riders.
Visitors and residents alike will be treated to a day of entertainment to cap off the year 2016 in style. The scenic ride up to Ski Apache is well-worth the visit. The Apache Drum Group will play traditional, ancient tribal music on the plaza. Admission is free and refreshments and snacks are available or you may enjoy hot food at the Main Lodge and adult beverage specials in the Spirit Bar upstairs.
